Silicon Carbide Super-SiC Heat Exchangers: How They Handle Hydrofluoric Acid and Other Ultra-Corrosive Media

August 10, 2026 • GreyTec Team

Silicon carbide (SiC) Super-SiC heat exchangers are the standard choice when a process fluid, such as hydrofluoric acid (HF), fluorine compounds, or concentrated halogen acids, would destroy metal, graphite, or even PTFE-lined equipment within weeks. Silicon carbide is chemically inert to nearly every acid and alkali at process temperature, and it does not corrode, pit, or leach under sustained HF exposure, which is why it is specified almost exclusively for HF alkylation units and fluorochemical production.

Why Metal and Graphite Fail in HF Service

Most metals, including high-nickel alloys, are attacked by hydrofluoric acid through pitting and stress corrosion cracking, especially at elevated temperature. Impervious graphite performs better but is still permeable to some fluoride compounds over time and is limited in mechanical strength. Silicon carbide has none of these weaknesses: its crystal structure has no grain boundaries for acid to attack, giving it a corrosion rate close to zero even in concentrated HF.

How Super-SiC Construction Handles Extreme Corrosion

Super-SiC heat exchangers use sintered or reaction-bonded silicon carbide tubes and blocks, sealed with PTFE or fluoropolymer gaskets rather than metal fasteners in the wetted path. This all-ceramic wetted surface means the equipment can run continuously in HF, chlorine, and mixed-acid duties without a scheduled corrosion allowance, unlike metal alloys which are designed around a planned wall-thickness loss.

Typical Applications

SiC heat exchangers are used in HF alkylation cooling, sulfuric acid concentration, semiconductor-grade acid purification, and fluorochemical intermediate cooling. Wherever a process specification rules out metal and graphite on corrosion grounds, silicon carbide is usually the next material considered.

Choosing a Silicon Carbide Heat Exchanger Supplier

Because SiC is brittle compared to metal, mechanical design, gasket selection, and thermal shock protection matter as much as material choice. GreyTec supplies Silicon Carbide Super-SiC heat exchangers engineered for HF and other ultra-corrosive services, backed by our engineering and consultancy team for correct sizing and installation.
