When the plug is turned, the hole within it aligns with the pipe to allow fluid to pass through or block the flow when perpendicular to the pipe. Plug valves consist of a cylindrical plug with an aperture that is rotated to open or close the valve. When aligned with the valve body, the aperture allows fluid flow; when perpendicular, it seals the valve. The aperture is normally smaller than the pipe diameter, which ensures that as it turns the plug body is in full contact with the inner liner. There is no “gap” in which the liquid can accumulate.
This is unlike a ball valve which consist of a spherical ball with a bore that is rotated to open or close the valve. Due to the curvature of the ball, fluid can enter into the empty space between the ball and inner wall of the valve. This accumulated fluid can crystallise, and damage the liner.
The disadvantage of plug valves as compared to ball valves is that they require higher torque to operate and have a higher pressure drop.
